I have wanted to learn how to play the dulcimer for a long time! Hoping to buy my first one soon. I took both piano lessons and guitar lessons as a teen, so I have some (rusty) music theory in my background. These videos by Jess are perfect to help me understand the music theory of the dulcimer. Each video is a good length; long enough to learn the skill, but short enough to not be overwhelming. Jess explains and shows each step clearly and patiently!

Coming to my 15/14 hammered dulcimer as a beginner, but having played woodwinds and knowing how to read music, these videos are a perfect fit, and make much more sense than "number method" instruction. Thanks, Jess, these videos are excellent!

I'm having such fun learning how to play the hammer dulcimer! Mine is about 1-1/2 months old--a finch from Songbird 17/16/8. So glad I found you on you-tube. I wish you still had the downloads and book. That would be helpful. Nevertheless, it sounds beautiful and if the book and downloads ARE available please let me know! I don't know tech stuff! 86 and trying to learn the dulcimer is a challenge for sure! But I plan to make it happen.

Thank you so much for these free videos, Jess--what a gift! I woke up one morning about a year ago with a sudden desire to learn how to play the old hammered dulcimer a parishioner made for my father. It's such a beautiful instrument, but I was worried I'd have trouble finding teaching resources. These videos are so clear and I appreciate how you build us up through exercises over time. I also bought your book, which is another helpful resource. I appreciate all you do to keep this tradition alive and accessible. God bless you!

At 7:28 I am confused. What do you mean by one chord, 4 chord, and 5 chord? Aren't use using the same number of notes? It sounds lovely and I want to practice this, especially since I have a hard time with droning, or trying to get one hand to do something other than the melody. Not that coordinated yet.

This video was very helpful. I have the instruction manual and have been fun and been practicing an hour a day with scales. I have progressed to page 15 and feel comfortable. I turned the page and am feeling lost and a bit helpless. I'm glad I listened to RUclips lesson 5 today. I'm not so discouraged and will try these exercises. Perhaps I should do both RUclips and the manual. Thanks for the help.
